Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environment quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizer made with synethic ingredient or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled “organic, “a government approved certificate inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certificated, too. Organic foods can be part of a healthy diet. Whether they are much better for you than conventional food is still up for debate. Organic produce and other ingredient are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizer, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products do not take antibiotics or growth hormones.

As far as weight is concerned, eating only organic food will not necessarily help you lose weight. You still need to make good food choices, both in what you eat and how much. Many foods labeled as organic can still be high in sugar, fat, and calories — so a bag of organic potato chips isn’t a healthy food. Whether you go organic or buy conventional, eat a variety of healthy foods, including fruit and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, watch portion sizes, and be sure to be active every day.


  • Organic product contains fewer pesticides: chemicals such as fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides are widely used in conventional agriculture and residues remain on (and in) the food we eat.
  • Organic food is often fresher: because it doesn’t contain preservatives that makes it last longer. Organic produce is often (but not always, so watch where it is form) produced on smaller farms near where it is sold.
  • Organic farming is better for the environment: organic farming practices reduce pollution, conserve water, and use less energy. Farming without pesticides is also better for nearby birds and animals as well as people who live close to farms.
  • Organic meat and milk are richer in certain nutrients: result of a 2016european study show that levels of certain nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, were up to 50 percent higher in organic meat and milk than in conventionally raised versions.
  • Organic food is GMO-free: genetically modified organism (GMOs) or genetically engineered (GE) foods are plant whose DNA has been altered in ways that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding, most commonly in order to be resistant to pesticides or produce an insecticide.
