“Me too movement”

There has been debate on “Me too” movement weather it is worth supporting or not because it has so many merits and demerits but before anyone comments on it, should know about it.

The “Me too” movement is a movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault of women “me too” went viral in October 2017 as Me too movement a hash tag [#] used on social media in an attempt to demonstrate the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment especially in the workplace. A social activist and community organizer Tarana burke, first time used the phrase “Me too” in 2006, on the MySpace social network as part of a campaign to promote “empowerment through empathy” among women of color who have experienced sexual abuse, particularly within underprivileged communities.

The use of the “Me too” hash tag on social media spread quickly in India, where sexual harassment is commonly referred to by the word “eve-teasing” a term described as misleading, tame, and diluting the seriousness of the crime. The original purpose of “Me too” is empower women through empathy, especially young and vulnerable women. Alyssa Milano encouraged using the phrase in October 2017 as a hash tag to help reveal the extent of problems with sexual harassment and assault by showing how many people have experience these events themselves. It has been spread to dozens of languages and millions of people started using the phrase, the purpose changed and expanded, as a result it has come to mean different things to different people.

The phrase “Me too” had been used more than 200,000 times by end of the day when it was tweeted more than 500,000 times by October 2016 on Facebook, the hash tag was used by more than 4.7 million people in 12 million posts during the first 24 hours. The use of the “Me too” hash tag on social media spread quickly in India, where sexual media spread quickly in India, where sexual harassment is commonly referred to by the word “eve-teasing” a term described as misleading, tame, and diluting the seriousness of the crime. However authorities are also concerned about the misuse of this campaign as so many people comment against it and also found fake cases on men.

There have been attempts to teach India women about workplace rights and safe reporting, as well as educate men about the scope of the problem. In 2012 people linked “Me too” to a social movement which followed a violent gang rape in Delhi that later resulted in a woman’s death, which followed caused the Indian govt. to institute harsher punishment for rape. We can take another example when it was mass sexual assaults during the 2018 years celebration in Bangluru, which was associated with “#Me too” the incidents were initially dismissal by the police until someone uploaded CCTV footage of the assaults to social media. Govt. official came under fire for starting “western” women clothing and values were the cause of the rapes, and indicated women families should not allow them to go to parties or major celebrations.

On September 27, 2018 actress Tanushree Datta accused Nana Patekar for sexual harassment. Later on accusation was made on Bollywood Actor Alok Nath and Juhi Chawala has also shared her experience about Alok Nath when he used to live with her boyfriend.

The women and child development minister plan to set up a panel of legal experts to look in to the allegation of sexual harassment that have surfaced in the “#Me too” campaign, minister Menka Gandhi said on 12 October 2018, asserting that she believes in the “pain and trauma” of every complainant. Govt. set up a committee with senior judicial and legal person as they members to look in all issues emanating from the “Me too” campaign. The committee with senior judicial and legal person as they members to look in all issue emanating from the “#Me too” campaign. The committee will look into the legal institutional frame work in place for handling complaint of sexual harassment, including some of the complaints if required, and advise the ministry on how to strength these.

The women dignity and empowerments cannot place by itself, on equal footing with men; the need of hour is the change of social attitude towards women. Thus a change of social attitude and honesty [on the part of govt.] is must to take the women participation in the nation building at grass root level.

Swami Vivekananda has rightly quoted “There is no chance for the welfare of world unless the condition of women is improved. It is not possible for a bird to fly on only one wing”
